FAQYour questions, gently answered
Do I get to keep my clients?
Yes. You remain the lawyer of record and maintain your client relationships. Matters administered and billed through V-Law's systems are treated as Firm clients for administrative and compliance purposes, and clients always keep the right to choose their lawyer, in accordance with Law Society rules.
What happens to my clients if I leave V-Law?
Client continuity is protected. Files administered through V-Law remain with the Firm, but clients may elect to move with you, subject to Law Society requirements.
Can I practise remotely or across provinces?
You may work remotely from anywhere. You may only provide legal services in the province or provinces where you are licensed, under each Law Society's rules.
How do billing and trust accounting work?
Billing runs through your Clio account, which is included in your plan. Trust accounting, bookkeeping and reconciliations are managed by the Firm's accountant and bookkeeper.
Why does V-Law retain 30% of collected fees?
V-Law pays out on fees collected from clients. The Firm provides shared infrastructure and operational support for all matters: administrative staff, accounting, trust compliance, technology and office services. The 30% supports those resources, so you practise without traditional firm overhead.
What support is included?
Financial and trust accounting, legal administrative services, practice management support, technology infrastructure, compliance assistance, optional access to legal assistants and paralegals, and a professional peer community.
Is this compliant with my provincial Law Society rules?
V-Law is structured to operate within provincial Law Society rules. You remain responsible for your legal services, while the Firm supports compliance for trust accounting, file administration, data storage and communications.
What is onboarding like?
It begins with an introductory call about your practice and goals. The Firm then sets up your systems, technology access and workflows, with training on how Firm processes work.
Does V-Law provide clients or leads?
V-Law supports firm-wide marketing and referral matching where appropriate, but does not guarantee a specific number of clients. You remain responsible for developing your practice, with marketing tools and guidance available.
Can I leave or cancel my agreement?
Yes. Agreements include defined notice and minimum-term provisions depending on your program, reflecting the Firm's upfront investment in onboarding and infrastructure.
